In order to provide you with the greatest possible care, Dr. Nordland has recommended I.V. Conscious Sedation for your surgery. This modality of treatment provides many benefits. You will feel relaxed, you should not encounter any pain or discomfort and the time of the surgery will seem to take only a few minutes. Your blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and oxygen saturation will be monitored throughout your procedure. Conscious Sedation is not general anesthesia, and has an unsurpassed safety record.

Should you arrive for your procedure with hypertension (high blood pressure can be seen with nervous anticipation), this medication will relax the blood pressure to a healthy range. Patients that come down with a cold or runny nose will be dried with our medications. Excess saliva that can act as an enemy to microsurgery and sterility will also be reduced allowing better surgical visibility and success. Jumpy or jittery micromovements by the patient will be perceived as bigger movements under the surgical microscope.

Your medication is titrated (given a drop at a time). This is important as every individual responds at a different rate to medications (just like people can respond differently to drinking alcohol). This allows an ideal level of relaxation for each individual. Delivery of medications via this route allows for precise dosage unlike oral medication that can take 30 to 45 minutes before the onset of affect. Medication to immediately reverse the affect is also readily available (this is almost never needed).

You will need a ride to take you home, and ideally someone to help you to your favorite easy chair or bed. We will not dismiss you to a taxi.

Dr. Nordland has provided this modality of sedation for his patients since he graduated form his surgical residency at Loma Linda University in 1982. Dr. Nordland is licensed by the state to provide I.V. Conscious Sedation and is a member of the State Board of Dental Examiners to conduct on-site evaluations of other doctors seeking this licensure.
